4th metatarsal head pain

I am a 45 year old runner. I have suffered pain for a few years at the head of the 4th metatarsal particularly after running. I have just had a steroid/anaesthetic injection into the joint (guided by x-ray) as a diagnostic check for an arthritic joint (post injury). The proposed treatment is to fuse the joint. Has anyone had this done? What was the outcome? I am unsure how this is likely to affect my future running/biomechanics.
