5 broken metatarsal bones

(2 discussions)

Hi,
My hsuband broke all5 metatarsal bones on 5/14/06.Since then, he has been in a compession cast, then a fiberglass cast, and surgery on the 1st? metatarsal bone (the big toe). After surgery he had another type of cast, like a splint with ace bandages.
Now he is in a fiberglass cast for another 3 weeks.
Then finally a walking cast.
His foot still swells when he has it down for a while.
He has broken many bones in his life, but this one has been a slow process. Is this normal? Thanks so much, Denise

i broke all the metatarsals, I was splinted (cast splint and bandages) 4 weeks but the foot was alwais too swollen to cast it and bones moved so I had the surgery. then I was 12 weeks in cast (changed every 4 weeks) then 3 weeks in walking cast. now I have a removable cast but it is more painful than the normal cast, I can’t walk too much. the sweling is normal.

Hi how is your husband now? I have also broken all five and am due to have the plaster off next week. My biggest problem is the swelling whenever my foot goes down.
