AC Joint separation

(3 discussions)

What type of AC Joint separation results in a distal clavicle fracture, a noticable bump on shoulder and distinctive shoulder instability? My right AC Joint was separated in a car/pedestrian accident 5 months ago: by instability I mean that I can lay on my left side, yet I can’t lay my right arm across my chest because it will “fall out of place.” I asked because the ER doctor said it was a 3rd degree separation, but when seen by an orthopedist it was declared barely a 2nd degree. To this date: I can’t carry any significant weight with my right arm, I can’t craddle a phone on my right shoulder or throw a ball overhanded with my right arm. While I can’t let my arm relax across my body while on my side because it will slide out of place, I can’t reach across my body with my right hand because of a distinct bony impairment. 5 months later it still feels as if my clavicle rests directly on the middle of my scapula. As for how was the injury was incurred? All I know is I was struck by car. One report says that I fell on my side where struck, another report says that I was struck with such force as to be thrown onto and over the car. I ask because I’m right handed, it’s my right shoulder and I’m tired of the limitations the AC joint separation has incurred. Thanks for reading and responding if you choose to respond

My brother is 50 years old and he had surgery for an AC Joint Seperation on 5-6-04. HIs post op instructions were No lifting.Upon return to work approx.10 dayslater he developed a bump as large as a baseball right above his elbow and a large indentation right above it. He is having alot of severe pain in his shoulder& arm. This is his right arm which is his dominant arm and his hand & fingers are going numb especially at night. He cannot turn his palm up.His arm looks deformed. So far no luck with anti-inflamatory or pain medications. He does not have a computer and I wanted to look into this for him. I also wanted to know if there is a time limit as to how long this will last if left untreated? Any info that you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely Betty West

My brother is 50 yrs old & he had surgery for an AC Joint Seperation on 5-6-04. His post opt. instructions wer NO lifting. Upon return to work approx.10 days later he developed a bump the size of a baseball right above his elbow & a large indentation above it. He is having alot of severe pain in his shoulder & arm. This is his right arm which happens to be his dominant arm and is basically useless at this time. It looks like it is just hanging there. His hand and fingers go numb at night. He cannot turn his hand palm up.His arm just looks deformed. He has tried anti-inflamatory and pain medications but they do not relieve the pain. He does not have access to a computer and as a concerned sister I wanted to check into this and see if it can be corrected and if there is a time limit in which it has to be done. It actually looks worse than I can explain. In my opinion it needs to be repaired but the surgeon is kinda giving him the run around. I will greatly appreciately appreciate any help or information that you can give me pertaining to this matter.Sincerley, Betty West I can be reached at 828-926-6326.Will accept collect call.
