Achilles tendon rupture

(5 discussions)

I am 33 years old and I had a complete rupture of my achilles tendon playing basketball. I am 5 weeks post surgery and in my third cast. Each time I get a new cast they move my foot up to stretch the tendon. I am now at a lateral state and I was told next time I will get a walking boot with a 10 degree cam. I have several questions and I am just looking for generalized answers because I know each injury is different and my doctor will guide me, BUT… :)once I get the walking cast should I expect any difficulty or pain walking?will the injury ever heal completely?what is the likelihood that I will re-injure the achilles? I have been hopping around on one foot for about a month now. I am worried that I am going to damage the other achilles now, am I being hyper-sensitive?Is there a good link out there that gives a rough idea of what levels of rehab I can expect at how many weeks of recovery?thank you very much for any information you can provide.Brian SprayberrySan Antonio, TX.

I would be interested in finding out the same. I am 38 and partially ruptured my achilles playing tennis almost 8 wks. ago. The Dr. prescribed cast treatment – I have been in a cast for 7 weeks. I did not have an operation. Can I put any weight on my tendon now? I will get my cast off in 3 wks. What can I expect? Will I be able to walk or will I still have to use crutches? How long before I can expect to return to normal activity? I am a cyclist and wonder how this injury will affect me in this activity? ThanksDavid

: I am 30 years old and a professional dancer(jazz, balllet, tap etc)I ruptured my achillies in a dance class and had my surgery 24 hours later. I was in a walking cast after 4 weeks and progressively lowered a one inch drop from this cast each week for 4 weeks. I felt no pain as each inch was taken out and again felt no pain once the cast was off and I was walking on two feet.My main problem now is regaining the strength in my leg.My physiotherapist ws quite surprised that my surgeon hadn’t started my physio until the 8 week mark.I’ve had very strong legs in the past, and a partcularly strong calf muscle. My left leg has virtually faded away. Now thatI’m at week 15 I’m still struggling with the one leg heal raises. I would advise to start the building strength process asap.Best of luck!Feel free to write re: any other questions.
