ankle hemangioma

(4 discussions)

Hi I hope you can offer some advice, I am 22 years old and have had chronic ankle swelling/bruising/pain since I was about 9 or 10 years old. My parents have said I have always had bruising/swelling even as an infant.
Doctors have never been able to come up with a diagnosis until a recent MRI showed what they are calling a “cavernous hemangioma” which I am told nothing can be done about it. Some days I cannot bear any weight due to constant pain and discomfort. Somedays my ankle is my ankle is so bruised, it’s usually has a bluish tint to it, and others it’s bluish/purple. I have looked up the term “hemangioma” and many sites say hemangioma usually go away by about 9 or 10 years old, which is when my ankle became much worse!! Have you had any experience with a problem similar to mine?? I have been to ortho’s, pod’s and primary doctors, I have had CT Scans, MRIs, numerous x-rays and I am told there is nothing at all that can be done, that I should just learn to live with the discomfort. I am going broke by having all these tests done, I was just curious to know if you have heard of this or have any past experience.
Thank you so muchLynn

I am at a disadvantage because I really don’t know the extent of the problem. So without seeing it I suggest a vascular surgery who specializes in microsurgery- such as reattaching limbs, hands etc.You might call a local hospital doctor referral line and ask if they have anyone like that or even check (if you have) your insurance company doctor list.

I hope you understand I am a disadvantage since I have not seen your ankle or the MRI. Have you worn any type of support compression hose?

I do, but they seem to only offer minimal comfort. Is what I have been diagnosed with that rare?? It’s very frustrating, and I saw 2 surgeons and neither one will operate to remove the hemangioma, although one said an amputation would be my best bet. I was just curious if you have heard of any other forms of treatment for hemangiomas. Thanks I apperciate your help, and time.Lynn

I apperciate your suggestions, I am just at my wits end, my insurance company is fighting every move I try to make. But I will look into another vascular surgeon, the last one I saw refuses to touch my ankle out of the fear I will bleed to death during the surgery. Thank you for your timeLynn
