ankle pain

(2 discussions)

Hi,
I have pain about 3″ up from my outer ankle bone on my left foot. I’m a runner, and slightly over pronate on that leg, however have purchased shoes to compensate for that. The pain has been present for about 2 weeks, but is getting worse. I feel a lump and can pinpoint the pain. It seems worse when I have no presssure on my foot. When walking or running, it hurts the most when my weight is on the ball of my foot- but not every step. No swelling or brusing, and no injury that I can recall. The pain is not constant, and I can rotate my foot in all directions without pain. The small lump, when touched, is very painful.

Sorry, got distracted, and posted before I was done. I’ve been icing it, and taking motrin, neither of which seems to help much. My “lump” is very small, something I don’t think anyone but myself could feel. I’d like to know if this is something I should work though like shin splints, or see a Dr. for. I am not giving up running. My running shoes are about 6 months old. That’s it I think- Thank you for your help!

From your description several thoughts occur to me; such as a stress fracture of the fibula, peroneal tendonitis, peroneal tendon tear, organglion cyst. I recommend you see a podiatrist or orthopedist for further evaluation and treatment recommendations.P.S. The shock absorption of most running shoes is supposed to be good for about 300 miles. I’m not sure how many you have on these shoes. I do not know if the shoes are any part of the problem.
