Atlas question

(5 discussions)

My husband has been seeing a chiropractor for 30 days.
His atlas vertabrae sits parallel to the top of the spine rather than at an angle.
We’ve been given to understand that this is a bad thing and could be causing many symptoms he’s dealt with for many years, that are consistently getting worse. Numbness in limbs, frequent passing out, vision problems, the list goes on. Does anyone have any knowledge about this type of thing? Been there, done that sort of thing?
It’s slowing destroying his life and we are looking for any help we can find.
Thanks in advance.

He has seen numerous doctors and had a multitude of tests ran. The first was heart checks, and he even has a LOOP recorder in his chest to record episodes, but nothing. He’s had EKGs, EEGs, sleep and otherwise, tilt table, etc, etc, etc. He passes out, sometimes with no warning, he “loses” his legs, sensation, so he falls…often. So you’re saying the atlas SHOULD sit parallel? If I’m looking at a left side view of his neck xray, the atlas is sitting like this_______. The chiropractor says it should sit like this . Not quite that steep, but you get the idea. This is in relation to the top of the spine, not necessarily the base of the skull. I’ve been unable to track down any pictures showing this same side view of a normal skull including those 1st 5 or 6 vertabrae. It would help if I could see that. Any ideas? Anyway, as you can see, we’ve reached the end of our tethers on this. It takes forever to get disability and he can’t drive or hold a regular job. I appreciate your assistance.

I think there is something going on deeper than a atlas/axis misalignment. Has your husbands symptoms changed at all under chiropractic care? I still think a MRA is a good idea. Has he ever had an MRI or CT scan of the brain? I would imagine if he has seen neurologists this would have been done.

The atlas should sit parallel to the occipital (the base of the skull). The atlas is the first vertebrae or what is commonly called C1. This vertebra rotates about the axis (C2) or the second vertebrae. Some chiropractors contend that a misalignment of this vertebra can cause a host of symptoms. Possibly the symptoms your husband is having. Your husband has gone to the chiropractor over a period of 30 days; I assume 2-3X a week. Has there been any improvement in his condition? As a chiropractor the most important thing to do is to eliminate all other possible causes as more serious problems can cause the same symptoms. Brain tumors can cause they symptoms, arterial blockages, certain neurological diseases, uncontrolled blood pressure, the list is long. Has any tests been performed to rule out other causes? Has your husband seen any other doctors? Before I move on further, give me some input as far as seeing other doctors, diagnostics tests etc.

I apologize. I just spoke with my husband, and he says I have this backwards! *sigh* I was trying to envision the xray and it didn’t work. He says it’s sitting at an angle NOW, and should be parallel. He’s also lacking the natural curve in the neck, and shows minimal correction. It may have been more, but he’s fallen twice since she started adjustments.
