Back Numbness

(2 discussions)

I have a tingly sensation or numbness in the upper part of my back below the shoulder next to the spine.
What could be causing this?

Typically, tingling and numbness is caused by irritation of a spinal nerve. This nerve can be entrapped (pinched) peripherally, by muscle spasm, or as the nerve exits the spinal cord. In the latter, the nerve is pinched by disc bulge, facet arthritis (bony build-up), or other causes. I treated a patient with this problem last year. He had tingling just to the right of the Spinous process in his upper back. Chiropractic treatments to that area focused on mobilizing the spinal joints, which had a inhibitive effect on the muscles in that area, leading to relaxation. He would have relief of the symptoms, but THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE
