back pain arising from chiropractic care

(2 discussions)

Hi. My daughter has had hip inflammation flare-ups for many years. To address this she recently went to a chiropractor and had 11 chiropractic treatments for what was diagnosed as sacroilliac (sp?)syndrome. She is refusing to continue any more treatments because she now has continuous pain and muscle spasms in the mid back due to adjustments. Is this normal in the course of treatment? She told the chiropractor but he didn’t respond. What should she do? I would appreciate any advice, thanks!

When a chiropractor will not answer your questions, I suggest you change chiropractors. Find a chiropractor that is refered to you by a friend or family member.Discomfort after the first few adjustments is not uncommon. However, with no improvement after 11 visits a change in protocol may be required.Your daughter may benefit from a lower force style of adjustment. Inquire around your area for a chiropractor who uses the activator or integrator adjusting instrument. They are both very effective at correcting spinal and pelvic misalignments with a minimal amount of force introduced. I hope it is only a misunderstanding between your daughter and her chiropractor. Have your daughter schedule a visit to discuss her condition and be sure to accompany her. Ask tough questions. In the end your daughter needs to know it is her health, she is in control and she needs to be confident in the care she is receiving.
All the best to you and please let me know how the situation resolves.

I recommend that you find another chiropractor who answers your questions. That is a important part of your health care and, as a patient, you have the right to know what is going on with your body. I am concerned that your daughter is having mid back pain when the hip pain was the primary reason for her to seek care. Are you getting adjusted in the mid back region? If so, did the doctor offer rational as to the reason for such treatment? Soreness after 11 treatments is not the normal outcome for most types of treatments, irregardless of the type of adjustment. I hope that you and you daughter continue with chiropractic treatments as part of your healthcare. There are many caring doctors with a variety of different treatments. Keep searching for the one that best fits your needs.
