Bicep pain, possible tear

(4 discussions)

I was loading sheetrock 2 pieces at a time from a cart to a flatbed truck by hand about 5 feet of the ground. They are pretty heavy I guess. I loaded the first and second 2-packs. During the third 2-pack I felt a pop in my right bicep by the elbow. My arm immediately bent towards my chest and their was severe pain. I couldn’t straighten my arm, I couldn’t even raise my arm to shoulder height. I went to an Orthopedist the next day and he told me, and I hate when a doctor says, you have a sprain! I have had tons of sprains in my life. I am an ex weightlifter and Hockey player, so I know pain and I think I might a sprain from a tear. Usually when a Dr. tells you that you have a sprain, he doesn’t know what’s wrong. Sprain is a safety valve for them. Thatls only my opinion, I could be wrong. I would like your opinion as to what I should do for relief.

I went for Xrays for my bicep today. They found a broken bone. The upper bone which meets the forearm bones had a nice chip missing and it’s laying there loose. I am going for an MRI tomorrow to check for any further damage. Shouldn’t that chip be removed? I have a very physical job and I am afraid it might cause further problems down the road. Thanx

Jeffrey,Your Orthopedist was technically correct by saying that you had a strain… What he might not have explained is that there are three degrees of sprains, from mild, to moderate, to severe. If you had a complete disruption of the muscle, that would be a Grade III Sprain, and is obviously very serious. If you do not get better with ice and anti-inflammatory medication, then you might want to go back to the Orthopedist for an MRI, which would be able to show the exact nature and severity of the tear. You should also ask your doctor for a referral to a physical therapist for rehab. Please let us know how you make out, and good luck.

Well, I had the MRI and it showed, in the exact wording, moderate thickening of the Biceps tendon, surrounding soft tissue edema, partial biceps tendon tear, sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament. So I am doing Ultrasound Therapy and we’ll see what happens. Thanx Doc!

I have been resting my arm as prescribed. The pain the the Bicep has had some relief, or maybe I am adapting to it. I have been using ice and wet heat. The pain though somewhat less is radiating into my forearm, and still no strength. Is it wrong to asl the doc to go for an MRI or some kind of testing to see what degree of damage I have in my arm? Thanx.
