Big Toe Nails Ripping Off…!!

I notice yesterday that my big right toe nail was starting to rip off-it has almost ripped all the way across from about 1cm from the base and it is a bit loose from one side.
Today I decided to take a look at my left big toe and it is doing the same thing! Except that it has not progressed as far.
Below each I feel a nail but it has only started growing.
There is no pain from either toes but it surprised me and scared me…to not have any big toe nails-eeeww! Thank goodness it is fall season…no sandals! What is the best way to deal with it…try to peel it off or wait for it to do it on its own? Please advise – it is so disgusting!

And also… What is the cause of this happening? Definitely want to take some preventative measures after it has grown in!

I recommend you see a podiatrist as to the cause. It might be damage from an injury, or shoes or even an infection. Until you know, the best thing to do is to file it down and keep it from trying to tear further.
