Big toe pain upon stretching

(4 discussions)

My left big toe hurts when I stretch out my foot — never happened before.
The pain radiates from the metatarsal down to just behind the toenail. It feels like the pain is along the tendon and ends as a band in the area behind the nail.
I also have some numbness or loss in sensation.
Please help me understand the possible reasons for this pain and what I should do about it.

Some of what you describe sounds like a tendonitis. The causes can be several- ranging from overuse, a bone spur, trauma, bad biomechanics. The best thing to do is see a podiatrist for further evaluation and treatment.

It hurts on the outside of my right large toe next to my toenail. It has some redness along the side of my toenail and underneath my toenail on the outside of the toe. Any idea what it is and what I can do?

I have started having the same experience, in my left foot, and it seems to be the entire big toe joint. Mine feels like it is swollen ALL of the time, and is painful enough when pressure is applied that I find it difficult to walk. There is no visible redness or bruising, and the pain/swelling is worsening with time. Is this tendonitis? I woke up with the stiffness one morning, and it has just never gone away.

It sounds like you might have an ingrown toenail. A visit to a podiatrist is what I recommend.
