Big Toe Pain / Arthritis

I fractured both my big toe and os trigonum 3 months ago. As of today, by big toe is still somewhat painful.
I went to my podiatrist last week who took fresh x-rays and was told that I have early stages of arthritis in my big toe. He did nothing for me, except to tell me that if it was still a problem in 6 weeks to go back to him. The toe is swollen and red on the outside. Any thoughts or information would be appreciated.
