Blak & Blue Toenail

I dropped a can on the toenail of my middle toe two months ago.
It caused a bruise beneath the nail and was sore for about a week.
The black and blue mark at the time was at the base of the nail, but now has grown out completely.
The problem is that as new nail has grown out it is also black and blue.
Now the discoloration is starting to spread all the way across the nail on either side of the original small bruise.
It does not hurt, but I’m wondering if I need to do something.
Will the nail die and fall off?
Will it keep growing in black & blue? Is there anything a doctor can or should do?
Thanks, Charles

It takes a year for a toenail to grow out completely from the root of the nail to the end. It is difficult to tell you more without seeing the nail. If you are concerned, have it looked at by a podiatrist.
