Born with flat feet

: I was born with flat feet. My mother and grandfather both have flat feet. I wore orthotics in my shoes through out high school and still do. Every doctor i’ve seen has said that my feet are about as flat as they come. My ankles really bend in a odd direction and I’m starting to experieced hip and back pain posture issues. Not a big problem yet, but I’m 20 yrs old!
Are there surgeries to correct this or do i just have to accept it. Also I’m an avid bike rider and feel that the strength of my calves and thighs help with this problem, because doctors have been surprised i don’t need surgery yet. Is it good to strengthen my legs, or is it just speeding up the process of my ackward walk, foot and back pain?

  1. Thank you very much for your response. I have one more question. Can or do these surgeries correct the arch and help the actual motion of my feet during walking/running or are they JUST for the pain aspect of flat feet?

  2. The short answer is yes there are flatfoot surgeries. However you need to be evaluated by someone who does these types of rearfoot surgeries. There are several different types of surgeries depending on the causes.
