Broken 5th metatarsal

(2 discussions)

I am a 62 yr. old type 1 diabetic for 48 yrs with extreme neuropothy. I broke my 5th metatarsal just 2 days ago and the Dr. just wrapped my foot and put me in walking boot and said to see him in a week. This seems like a tame procedure for this injury. What is the usual procedure for this injury in long term diabetics with neuropothy?

That depends on the type of fracture, i.e. is it in good position, is it displaced, where is the fracture- head neck shaft, base? Is it a Jones fracture? That’s a whole different ball game. What is your concern specifically about the treatment that was rendered? Did you voice your concerns to your doctor?

I too broke my 5th metatarsal. Be careful to stay off it as much as possible. I was but in a small ankle walking boot and when I went back for my follow up appointment 4 weeks later, the break was worse then it was initially. Now I have a larger boot and crutches for the next 4 weeks. If it doesn’t heal on its own, I will have to have surgery. Good luck and feel better soon.
