Broken Ankle Plate & Screws
(3 discussions)
I broke my ankle and had surgery, and had a metal plate and 4 screws put in. The Doctor wants me to have surgery again and take out the plate. I was told it’s because of problems with it getting cold in the Winter time, and the ankle aching. Do you think it’s a good idea, or should I just have the plate left in? Thanks!

Not a dr–nor a pt–just a person forced to live with metal plate and screws that can NOT be removed for 15 years. They hurt when it rains–or when stressed with weight bearing–ALWAYS. I only WISH I could get them out. Also, in time screws may back themselves out and cause even more trouble/infection.

I am just beginning the same process that you did.except my plate is longer with eight screws… I was told at the time that the plate needs to stay in for at least a year. After that, if it bothers you that it can be removed.

7 months after fracturing my ankle and having a plate and screws fitted, my orthopaedic surgeon has advised that these should be removed. Why remove them? What are the advantages as I seem to be getting on o.k. It seems that this involves further surgery, discomfort and time off work.
