(3 discussions)

i was running barefooted and I hit my big toe nail on the back of a friend’s shoe and now it is half cracked about half way up the toe. it has stopped bleeding…. what should I do? is it safe to put a bandage over it or leave it open. and will the nail grow back?

I too cracked both big toe nails they haven’t ever grown back properly and when they have actually managed to grow – the nail has been misshappen and often gets sore underneath, I use athletes foot powder to prevent much of the itchiness in the bit where the cuticle once was but once the nail has grown over I found that I cannot get releif until I pull the nail off again (the cuticle does not seem to secure the nail on very well) pulling the nail off is very painful and makes it bleed a lot but once the nail is off and healing taken place I apply a generous amount of athletes foot spray again and the itchiness goes away. This I find is a vicious cycle how can I break it?(not the nail – the vicious cycle..). I am embarrased to go to a Chiropodist but I know what I am doing cannot be good for the health of my feet.Any advice gratefully received.

You probably should bandage this until it is not tender any more. The nail will grow back. It might take 1 year for a toenail to grow from the root to the end of the toe. It will look misshappen for a good while.

My daughter split her big toe nail, about 1/4 of it is missing lengthwise on a slant. I have been helping her soak it and put a lil piece of cotton underneath the existing nail to help it heal over where it is missing. We have been putting bactigrase and bandage on it. Can you please give me some advice, will the nail grow back. What should I do to help her with this?
