Broken clavicle

(3 discussions)

I suffered a closed, complete fracture to my right clavicle in a fall directly to the shoulder. The break is closer to the lateral end, about one-third of the way in where it rises naturally. I am a swimmer. What are my chances of returning to 100% of my ability? (esp. competitively.) I am a 50-year-old female. The ortho has me in a sling, with no surgery needed…only PT. Thanks for any input.

What did you PT say about swimming again? If all heals well, there is no reason why you should not be able to swim. Just listen to your PT in regards to activity…

The PT and the ortho both paused a little too long, and said that I would swim in a YEAR. And they didn’t want to address the Q if I could be 100% the swimmer I was. Have you ever seen a competitive swimmer regain 100% after a clavicle break? Thanks.

I suffered a closed, complete fracture to my right clavicle in a fall directly to the right shoulder. I just had surgery consisting of a plate on the surface of the clavicle with screws on the fracture site. I am very active in numerous sports activities such as basketball, swimming, and boxing. When will I be able to participate in these sports with 100% potential?
