Broken Clavicle
My mother who is 86 had a fall and broke her right collar bone. We saw the x-rays yesterday, three weeks after the fall, and notice that there is a gap of about a 1/4 inch between the bone. The doctor said that it may or may not close. Does this mean that my mother will always have pain from this injury. She can’t take Tylenol or Advil forever without doing liver or kidney damage. She wears the sling if our walking about, otherwise she has mobility which is good. Will she ever be pain free and able to return to water aerobics and yoga?Any advice would be welcome.

Without seeing the x-ray, it is impossible to know the type, position, location, and severity of the fracture. Her Orthopedist is really the only person who is in a position to answer your specific questions. Sorry I can't be more help, but you need to make sure that her shoulder does not get stiff from too much use of the arm sling. Perhaps the doctor will give her a referral to a physical therapist for follow up care.
