broken foot

(2 discussions)

I am a 58 year old woman with type two diabetes. The bone in my foot above my middle toe is broken.
I broke it last Friday and never went to the podiatrist until Wednesday because I had no pain, just swelling.
The docter explored the pros and cons with me of surgery and I opted to first see if it heals with a walking boot cast (velcro, etc.). My question to you is, is this adequate or should I also be using crutches.
I am now on Evista and Fosamax and scheduled for a bone scan.
I am desperate to do whatever I have to to get this to heal.
I won a trip to Paris that I have to take or lose on Oct. 31st and I’d like to not have to wear this boot.
I’m also concerned that this boot appears to be to big for me and I don’t know how to judge the right size.
I am putting on a heavy sock to tighten it.
I also want to know what would have happened to my foot is I’d never gone in to the doctor and continued to presume it was just swollen because it was buised inside.
Thank You

I am at a disadvantage in that I can not see your fracture and how well aligned it is. Assuming it is in good enough position to heal with immobilization, then the cast brace is a good idea. Whether or not you use crutches is something you should discus with your doctor who treated you. As far as you being able to go to Paris without the cast brace, I think your doctor will probably want to X-ray you first to see if there is adequate bone callus before allowing you to go without it. You can’t rush the healing, but you can slow it down.
