broken knee cap, When will I walk alone again??

(10 discussions)

I broke my knee cap and just had surgery almost 2 weeks ago. I’m going for rehab but I just can’t wait to walk. How much longer til I walk without a walker and without being scared its going to break again? It feels as if my knee cap is off or not right. Has anyone been though this and know what I mean?

Hi Mary, I broke my kneecap three weeks ago and went to the web to search for the same answers. I have not started rehab yet and will be in the full brace for at least one more week, but I am soooo scared of it breaking again and won’t even try to hobble without the brace. I too feel as though it will never be the same and I will never walk. I noticed that you posted this in August. How are you feeling now that it’s October.Let me know if things have gotten better. Thanks.

I displaced and fractured (3 pieces) my right knee cap 16 months ago. The Dr. had to use 2- 3″ screws and wrap to pieces of wire around the patella to hold it together. I started walking with crutches after 3-4 weeks, an began using a cane after 3 months. I still use a cane for balance and strength. I began physical therapy after 8 weeks for about 3 months (3 times a day for 1 hour each) and then have been exercising alone ever since. I began using a stationary bike after about 6 months, and a treadmill after 9 months (Up to that point I couldn’t get on the treadmill or walk the slowest it would go – about 1 mile an hour). Three months ago I started doing Pilates to the extend I am able with my knee. It is still painful when I walk, but I’ve been able to go back to the driving range and I plan to play golf soon, I’ll just have to drive the cart and use my cane to get around on the fairway and greens. I still have the wires and screws in my knee, so that could be a cause of the pain. I just can’t afford to take time off from work for another round of surgery.Everyone has a different injury, so yours may not take as long as mine. One thing for sure – exercise, even if it hurts. Tolerable pain is needed for healing to happen and for your leg muscles, tendons, and ligaments to get back strength.Exercise, exercise, exercise and take it one day at a time. Its very difficult, so praise yourself for doing a good job every day!Best Wishes!!!

Dear Mary – I hope you’re walking around by now. I broke my right knee cap in August and also had to have it wired. It took about 8 weeks before I was comfortable enough to walk around without the brace, but now, after almost 3 months I can walk outside with a cane and today was able to drive. Hurray! I do my own exercises at home with a rented EMS machine and have also used the services of a RMT (masseur) to help me mobilize my knee. I was also advised to find a swing and use it for 10 minutes a day to help strengthen the muscles that are still so weak. Am now hunting the neighborhood parks for a suitable swing set! Good luck.

I BROKE MY KNEECAP IN JANUARY 18, 2013.I WAS OPERATED THE NEXT DAY, THE DOCTOR REPAIRED THE KNEECAP WITH WIRE AND SCREWS, NOW AFTER ALMOST 5 WEEKS OF OPERATED I HAVE TO USE THE WALKER TO MOVE AROUND AND I HAVE TO KEEP THE INMOVILIZER ALL THE TIME IN MY KNEE, MY QUESTION IS HOW LONG IS IT GOING TO TAKE ME FOR MOVING AROUND LIKE BEFORE, I AM SO SCARED NOT TO BE ABLE TO WALK LIKE BEFORE.

I broke my kneecap in late March, three months after I tore my ACL. Had surgery on the ACL in late December, which was bad enough, and then again on March 27 to wire my kneecap back together. I just started physical therapy and I am still on crutches. I had not completed the therapy from the ACL and my biggest fear now is that the knee is going to break again and I will not walk normally after all of this. The physical pain is constant, but the mental pain is much harder (it’s not easy being dependent on other people). The doctor said I will need one more surgery to remove all the wiring, which has really gotten me down. Trying to keep my spirits up, but I do not know anyone who has experienced this, so it is hard to talk to anyone about it without it sounding like I’m whining (which I am probably doing). I just take each day and pray that the exercises will put off that last surgery as long as possible. Would love to hear from anyone who has recovered from this type of injury. Thanks!

I broke my knee cap in a scooter accident. I am scheduled for surgury tomarrow (7/29/04). I work in a warehouse doing shipping and receiving. How long should I expect to be out of work for? I am usually on my feet all day at work moving pallots around usually with either a forklift or manual pallot jack. –> Mark

I am attempting to get information on how much force is needed to fracture (break) a kneecap. Do you have any information on this subject?
