Broken Kneecap (Patella)

(5 discussions)

I broke my kneecap (patella) 6 weeks ago, and my leg comes out of plaster tomorrow. Can anyone tell me how long it takes for my knee to get back to normal? I live in England, and my doctor has told me that my hospital I am attending does not offer any physiotherapy! So I am a bit concerned. please email me at [email protected]

I broke my knee cap and I had a brace on it for 2 weeks and it took about a month for it to heal. I have been through therapy because I need to strengthen it back up. I cannot put any pressure on it like walking up stairs or squatting My dr. told me that is as good as it is going to get but I spoke with other dr.s and they said it’s not true just keep walking up stairs and I will build my muscle back up

Hope you’re stronger by now. I broke my kneecap last year and had surgery to hold the two pieces together. Physical therapy was absolutely crucial. One of the goals was to get the leg to bend to 135 degrees, and that took me a while. I can’t imagine recovering without formal pt, since the encouragement helped. I, too, still have trouble both up and down on stairs. Good luck! Claire

I broke my knee cap in half horizontally and I have 2 screws and wire holding it together…. when I went for PT I only needed 4 weeks of it 3x a week… but when I first started I was only able to bend my knee 34 degrees and when I left I was able to get the ROM back… and it still hurts getting up in the am and also going up stairs and lifting stuff.

I broke my knee cap 5 years ago but i didn’t realize it at the time. I only knew for sure when I got MRI and bones scans few months ago. I’m going into have surgery on it as it still causes me pain when playing football. The surgeon is inserting screws into the kneecap in the hope that it will heal. Do you know the chances that this will work and what is the rehabilitation period like

my son, age 45, broke his kneecap in late november. He had surgery and some physical therapy. the wires in his knee are bothering him and he would like to know, if he has them removed, how long the recovery period is for that. He is released to go back to work the first of june. will this procedure lengthen his time off work? also, to remove the wires, does it require more than outpatient surgery?
