Carie, I have been in Sports Medicine for so long (20 years) that I would be willing to bet that you have what is known as a classic “Boxer’s Fracture”. They almost always come from someone punching something hard, and the fracture is always to the 5th metacarpal (small finger). You really do need to see an Orthopedist for X-rays. I just had a patient (a 17 yo fooball player) who did the exact same thing. I took one very quick look and told him it was fractured, but that he would need X-rays to see just how bad the fracture was. Unfortunately for him, he required surgery a few days later. I don’t say this to worry you, but to impress upon you how important it is that you get your hand evaluated by an Orthopedist to rule out a fracture, and to get proper treatment if necessary. Good luck, and please let us know how you make out. Until then, use ice and keep your hand elevated to reduce any swelling. Advil will help with any pain, and inflammation.
