Broken Navicular Bone

(5 discussions)

I am going crazy not being able to find much information on the net with respect to broken navicular bones! over four months ago I broke my navicular bone in two places and took a chuck of bone out.
I was in a cast for two months, and since that time I have been wearing a boot, my range of motion is much better now, but it still hurts quite a bit to walk heel to toe. Is this normal?
How long does it take to heal? and, why is surgery still an option, and what would warrant having surgery?

A little over a month ago I fractured the navicular bone on my right foot. I fractured it in such a way that if I put weight on it I could possibly break it. So I haven’t been able to walk on it for the past month. Since I do gymnastics, the doctor is worried that it might be a stress fracture, and she says those take longer to recover from. I haven’t experienced any pain in my foot since I’ve been in the cast, and even though I’m not supposed to, I have tried walking on it and that also doesn’t hurt. I’m worried about how it’s going to feel when I get the cast off. You spoke of having pain from just walking on it. Do you still have that or has it gone away yet? It’s killing me not being able to do gymnastics or go snowboarding and was hoping to get back to that as soon as the cast comes off! (which is tomorrow!)

Hi Tammy. I was also told about 5-6 months ago that I have a stress fracture on my navicular bone. It happened during a fall that I had over 8 months ago. I also tore tendons and ligaments so I had surgery to fix that. My doctor was hoping that being in a cast for 4 weeks would fix the fracture and he said if not he would have to go in and put a screw in to hold it together. I’m now 8 weeks post op from my tenon repair and my foot is still bothering me. I also have a hard time walking heel to toe as you described…I’d be happy to talk to you and share information….just email me. I did find a few sites on the net that I can share with you. Take care

About 4 years ago I was playing in a flag football game. I made a hard cut and heard a loud pop. It did not hurt but I had a hard time walking for about a week. I went to the doctor and was told it was a minor sprain. I had an air cast and it did get better. I had no swelling except for a small balck and blue mark. I recently went back to the doctor for a physical and a check on my ankle because I have noticed that there was a bump on the inside of my foot and I had some slight pain. This was a new doctor and he told me to take an x-ray. Sure enough….broken. I will probably need surgery to shave down the bone. Any help on procedures would help.

I broke my Navcular a year ago jumping off a wall, it was x-rayed and no break was shown. So I undertook physio on a very badly sprained ankle. After 8 months an MRI scan, three specialists and numerous x-rays it was operated on. It was considered risky to internally fix the navicular because it had been broken for 8 months and the option of a tripple fusion was considered, however during the operation the surgeon took the internal fixation with two screws, one very large screw lateral screw (the lesser of two evils, maybe).
After six weeks of no weight bearing in a moon boot, followed by four weeks of slowly increasing weight bearing on crutches I was limping around on my own again. It is now four months since the operation (12 since the accident), and progress is a little slow although I am managing a walk of 25 minutes with a slight limp. I have been having physio, shoe insoles and a video of my walk which showed my foots mobility to be impaired in particular pushing off at the end of my step with the ball of my foot, my big toe is curling around inwards like a big bow and rolling up on to the outstep of my foot is particularly limited. I have tried to push it with calf raises at the gym but it has been giving me significant pain. I cycle, swim do abdominal stability excersizes and take shark cardilidge and glucosimine!
I am seriously concerned that this is going to be a permanent injury (disability) and considering I am an otherwise very active 27 year old this is a little hard to take. So any medical knowledge that I might be missing out on please email me with and if you have read this far you deserve a medal.
    Thanks, Matt_NZ’n the UK
