Broken Patella

(5 discussions)

I shattered my patella about 4 weeks ago and am alot of pain. I had surgery and they could only save two med. size pieces which they wired together and put a cable in my leg. I am on a walker, but dr. does not want me to put much weight on leg because of pain. One dr. said 6 weeks before they took cable out of my leg and one said 6 months. What is the normal time. My leg is in a imobilizer right now. When can I expect pain to go away and to walk again without walker?

If they take cerclage (Kirschner) wires out of patella at 6 weeks post-op they will probably brake it again because of the force they have to put on it. Leave them in there a lot longer (like 6 months) to give it time to heal properly. Don’t force anything and ask your doc more info. Good luck

Have had 2 ops, 4 weeks apart to get the wires and cables the correct lenght. Came off pain killers after 3-4 weeks from accident. Brace came off at 6 weeks, began to walk un-aided (no crutches) in the brace after 3-4 weeks. Wires in for at LEAST 6 months. Started physio 4 days ago and can get to 90deg, although painfully. It is all going very slowly. Keep the leg very tightly braced. Loose brace = pain. Tight brace = no pain.

I shattered mine about 3 months ago in a motocross crash. It crushed the top tearing the quad free allowing it to roll back and drove the 2 major parts out the bottom of the skin. 2 screws and cable holding the quad in place, I am now at about 20%. Doc says in about 12 months I should be around 80% and safe (relativly speaking) to race again.
