Broken ribs

My husband and a worker fell off a roof(the other guy fell on him)last Thursday, they both landed on a stack of plywood. Anyway, Monday we took him to the emergency room, the doctor tolf him there is nothing he could do about it. My concern is that they did not even perform any x-rays. I can hear the bones crack every time he moves and he also grabs his chest as if his sternum could have been damaged.
If I am not mistaken that could cause bruising to his heart. How do we know if one of his ribs may be causing internal damage? We called the orthopedic in the area, and he stated they did not treat broken ribs. Where do we go from here? Any suggestions? One more thing,how long does it take for this type of injury heal?
