Broken Wire in Knee Migrated Through Joint

(2 discussions)

Thirteen years ago I had surgery to repair a broken kneecap. A figure eight wire was used to attach the kneecap.During my last visit with my surgeon I was told I could remove the wire or leave it alone.
Since I was not and did not have any pain I never bothered to have the wire removed.Ten weeks ago I awoke suddenly with excruciating pain behind my knee.
I thought it was a leg cramp.
The leg swelled and I went to see my chiropractor who ordered an ultrasound to rule out a blood clot.
That checked out and we proceeded with a bit of therapy and a followup visit to an orthopedic surgeon.
The surgeon took and x-ray and discovered the wire from my prior surgery had broken and a piece had migrated to the back of my knee.
The ortho suggested rest, ice, compression and elevation and told me to come back in a few weeks if it didn’t get better.Well, it didn’t get better so I went back. Now he has prescribed 6 sessions of physical therapy and Vioxx!
I went to the physical therapist and he does not agree with the therapy.
He is afraid the therapy will do more damage. This week my chiropractor ordered a CT scan – as an MRI is out of the question with that metal in my knee. The CT scan confirmed a one inch piece of wire broke from the figure eight and migrated through the joint into the back of the knee.At this point I am very afraid and in much pain.
My orthopedic surgeon has offered little help and I don’t know who to go to or what to expect.

Find another orthopedic surgeon and get another opinion.

I agree, get a new dr. I had the same surgery done a year ago and just got the wires taken out last week. In the past 14 months, I have not been able to recover full quadricep strength (I was in a cast for a week before the did the original surgery). DId you have any problem with muscle atrophy? This is really stressing me out since I can’t work.
