bruised sternum healing time

(15 discussions)

My sternum became bruised in October due to a blow to my chest from a 3″ mallet head that was thrown on a concrete floor and richoted into my chest. I was told by the doctore, after three series of x-rays that it would heal in 6-8 weeks–but it is now May and I am still experiencing intermittent pain and discomfort.

A good manual physical therapist may be able to help you. It sounds like you have an anterior subluxed rib and it can be treated by a qualified physical therapist

I hurt my sternum one year and a half ago. It became very painful and swollen as a result of wearing a very heavy packpack. It is slightly protruding right in the middle of my chest.
Please help me. I am very frightened by this. It is still sore after all this time.

Hello my names is James I am twenty one years old. I am going to be at a training camp for arena footballin mid february. I was injured in a unfriendly game with some guys. A guy took a dirty move and shouldered me in the chest when I was not looking and the play was already over. Ever since then I have had a level of 7 on a scale of 10 when it comes to pain. I have still been trying to work out and have been unable to do my regular work outs. Could you please give me some advice as to what I can do to help myself. This is a chance for me to have a career in ball and take care of my son whom I am raising by my self. Thank you for any help you can give me. I am 6″2 and 285 lb.cordially

I am going through the same thing, I put pretty much my whole body weight on a machine in the gym that you do verticle sit up’s on and it’s been about 3 1/2 weeks and I’m still sore. Although the pain subsided after 2 1/2. I resumed regular activity, lifting heavy things at work and such, and just a couple day’s ago the pain returned. Doc said to keep taking Ibprofin and warm compresses. What did you do to ease your pain?

For some odd reason when I sleep I don’t have any discomfort, only when I start my every day activities.
    Thanks

Hey, I am going through the same thing, I was at the gym and had to show how to use a sit up machine and did it incorectly. After a breif doctor visit and 2 weeks of being sore the pain and swelling went away so I resumed regular activity’s. I guess heavy lifting was not for me because I re injured it a second time and have been having some pain and discomfort for about 4 weeks. I was told it would take a long time to heal and not to over exert myself. But still 4-5 weeks in it still bothers me.

My name is Doug and while I was playing hockey, I came in to check someone full speed, at the last second my oponent saw me coming and was able to put his stick across my chest. I have minor pains when I lift things and when I sleep I have to lay flat on my back and not move. It’s been about 10 days and I’m only seeing minor improvement in my condition.
I believe I may have bruised my sternum and this is the only place that gave me accurate information about when I may be able to resume playing. If anyone has any information on how to treat this please email me at your earliest convienince
    Thank you

Hi, my names Sam. During a sparing match in my taekwondo class I took a couple hard hits to my sternum. Not even 10 min. later I started to feel nausiated, had difficulty breathing and almost passed out. So far its only been about a week, but it still hurts and I am having problems with stretching because it just hurts my chest too much. I havnt had it checked by my doctor, I’m not sure if its serious enough to do that yet. Any sugestions?

Same thing happened to me in 2006…that was 12 years ago…seat belt bruised my sternum and compressed my upper body….still hurts if I lift something the wrong way or work out too hard at the gym….my chiropractor said “you’ll never be the same” after the car accident….now I’ve hurt it again in a fall and it’s been a week and is killing me…. I just ignore the pain and keep going.

Hello, my name is Lindsay. I’m in the 10th grade and I play basketball all the time. During practice one day I got elbowed in the chest and it hurt to breath in deeply. So I went to the doctor and he said I had a bruised sternum. I got a strap to go around my chest but I still had pain. This was all about 4 months ago. Again in a basketball game I got elbowed in the chest and it’s starting to really bother me. I’m wearing the strap again but is there anything else that would ease the pain? I would appreciate your help. Thanks

i was taking a short cut thru the woods one day in a golf cart and I bent over to pick some thing up and I hit a hole with the front tire and my sternum hit into the steering wheel. I get pain there some time after I play golf and I rub aspercreme on it and it relieves the pain. I showed the docter he said was not a tumor and it would have to heal on its own.

I was helping my husband take out a large piece of furniture and I was the one guiding the piece out of the doorway and because it was such a tall item it had to be tilted back in order to fit through the doorway. When we got it through the door and tried to put the piece down, the bottom half came down and hit me in the sternum. I am now experiencing pain. I have no difficulty breathing nor do I have any pain when I take a large breath. It hurts when I turn a certain way like it’s pulling a muscle. I should have put ice on the injury when it first happened but I didn’t think about that. Any idea how long this will take to go away and is it to late to start treating it with ice packs?
