bunion

I had a bunionectomy 4 years ago.
A friend recommended the surgeon because she was pleased with her outcome. It didn’t take long for my bunion to return, but now the pain is becoming too much. I don’t want to return to the same surgeon since he didn’t do a good job (he didn’t reposition the bone because he said it didn’t need it–obviously it does). Can I have the surgery again and what is the best way to choose a surgeon.
Thank you.

Yes you can have another surgery. There will certainly be scar tissue now where the first surgery was done. Sometimes it can be difficult to work with but it certainly is possible. As far as picking another doctor, there are many ways. If you are in a managed care plan, you can usually go online and see the doctors in your area. Whether to chose a podiatrist or orthopedist is another consideration. Most general orthopedists do not do as much foot surgery as a podiatrist. Since I am a podiatrist, I guess you know my answer. A podiatrist certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery is one who has passed a rigorous and comprehensive examination. While this is not a 100% guarantee of success in every procedure, it means the doctor has put forth a great deal of time and effort in becoming the best that he or she can for their patients. You can go the the ABPS website and search for a podiatrist in your area. Many folks ask their friends or physicians for referrals as well. You may also want to write down your questions so when you go you have them right there. Alot of times, folks get intimidated by a doctor and are afraid to ask questions. I feel if you leave my office not understanding then I have not done my job. My office manager tells me I talk too much.Hope this helps.
