bunions

(2 discussions)

I have bunions on both feet, the great toe. The right one is tender on top of my foot and slightly swollen. I recently started to do exercises to stretch the plantar area of my feet and wonder if this could be causing me more pain. I am wearing walking shoes with a wide toe area and soft orthotics.(I’ve recently started to see a podiatrist.) The right big toe is leaning towards the second toe and this is where I have the tenderness on top. It is also tender under the toe. I was told that I have a defect in the “sesmoid” bones as they are split. I went to see the foot dr. because I had discomfort in the bottom of my big toe area and my arches. He said I have high arches. I have taken Voltaren 1-3 times a day to ease the tenderness/swelling but it is still there. (I admit I went down to one pill a day after a day or so.)Do you have any suggestions for comfort for me? Thank you.

The stretching may very well be aggravating your problem. You might consider a custom rigid orthotic which your foot doctor can make for you. Changing to another anti-inflammatory might help, as would using ice as needed. Surgery might be indicated if conservative measures fail. Good Luck. Vivian A DPM

First, I would suggest you return to your podiatrist. Then discuss other orthotic options. I would recommend you decrease the stretching for the time being, and avoid shoes with too high a heel. Ice when you can. Anti inflammatory medicines can be useful, taken as directed.Hope this helps!Vivian A DPM
