Calf muscle tear

(3 discussions)

I am 39 and very active. Last week I tore my calf muscle playing tennis. The doctor was vague about my recovery and basically said “it will get better”. I was told that I could do things per comfort level. I spent 5 days in a wheel chair/crutches. I am now hobbling without any crutches, but the leg is becoming sore to the touch. How do I know if I am doing damage? What is the typical healing process? Should I expect bruising? Is any more pain an indicator of something bad? Please HELP!!

I tore my calf muscle while playing badminton. Since I did not know the extent of damage I played again after 7 days as I was feeling better. But it happened again – this time was worse than the previous. This was about 10 days back. Though I am better – can walk at a slow pace on both legs I would like to know the best line of recovery/treatment.

Hi, I had a calf muscle tear/sprain on May 8, 2014 and am still cannot walk properly unaided. First thing get a decent doctor – the diagnosis of calf tear seems elusive. Theres a big difference between a tear and a strain – there are plenty of websites just Google it. Get an MRI – don’t trust the look/feel test.Next importantly get a great physiotherapist that you can work with. Do the RICE protocol and remember ELEVATE means above the heart. Don’t be afraid to baby the leg – the first time I was on crutches for 6 weeks (it was too painful to put any weight on my foot). Graduate to a cane. Listen to your body.Hope this was helpful.Diane

My wife has suffered muscle tear just below the calf area. Probably it happened due to motor bike kick bouncing and hitting. It has been more than 8 years and now the pain has resurfaced for last 4 years. Pain killers and creams are of little help. Physiotherapy cessions also have not solved the problem. Can you help?
