Can Ligaments Heal themselves

I tore my co-lateral/lateral ligament on my 5th metatarsal. I injured the same area 2 years ago and had surgery on it to repair it. The surgery went well and healed in 6 weeks. I recently re-tore the ligament in the same place. I took X-Rays and MRI’s and it is torn. The ligament has been torn for 6 months and is painful.
Can ligaments heal themselves or is surgery a faster road to recovery?

In general ligaments can heal if they are in good position and splinted long enough. If there is continued motion while healing is trying to occur, then it might be less than optimal. I am not clear on what ligament you tore and why it was reinjured. Your doctor is probably the best one to answer the question. If you feel it necessary get a copy of your MRI and get another opinion.
