Care after bunion surgery
Senior Lady,You are very brave to have this surgery done on both feet at the same time.
I am 42 and had only one foot done and it was more difficult than I imagined getting around, bathing, etc.
My husband was able to take two weeks off to help me around the house, and my two children (ages 9 and 12) were also very helpful.
I had a gauze wrap, followed by an ace bandage and a surgical boot post-op.
The doctor told me to get around on my heel of the boot, which I did when my foot was first numb, but by day three, it was painful. I then resorted to crutches, which I used for 10 days.
After that, I got around on one crutch and finally 6 days later, on the heel of the boot.
I had help getting in and out of the tub to bathe, and I had to keep my foot dry until my stitches came out 17 days post-op.
This recovery is quite tiring, as I am in fairly good physical health and it has taken me nearly 4 weeks to feel some strength back.
I will be going into the smaller “clog” later this week and will also start 8 weeks of physical therapy (something I was initially not aware of).
So, please be sure and get plenty of help (esp. with two feet done at once!) and don’t rush your recovery too fast.
