chest pain

(3 discussions)

Hello, I have been having chest pain for about 6 months. I was starting to worry that it was heart related but it only seems to happen when I move and cough and not a general pain. I don’t have any other heart related symptoms, shortness of breath, etc. and I’m only 35 and in pretty good physical shape. Usually when I feel the pain, if I stretch my arms and twist my chest there is a distinct “pop” from the area where my ribs meet the scapula and the pain is relieved. Could this be a dislocated rib? Near the time the syptoms began I hurt my chest working out at the gym but it wasn’t a traumatic injury. thanks for your time, and this service

    Hi Greg,
If you scroll down to the question I posted for Dr. Brian on 3/21, (Chest, ribs, scapula?), you will see the response he gave me. It seems like your problem is similar to mine. I went to see a chiropractor. I started treatment a little over a week ago and it seems to be helping. I also received a massage from a massage therapist that specializes in sports injuries. That felt good and helped a lot.
    Good luck! Kim

    Greg,
The answered you provided for your own question was very intuitive. Many times, my patients know what their problem is before they ask me. However, they ask to get the confirmation. It sounds like your problem is a rib “subluxation,” which may be confused with dislocation. A dislocation is joint that is separated from the joint. A subluxation, is considered a misalignment, or a “less than dislocation.” The chest injury at the gym most likely did cause the subluxation to the rib articulation in your back. Your ribcage moves because of the joints in the front and back. The twisting and popping you feel probably allow you to have temporary relief. However, by receiving chiropractic treatment to that area, you can receive direct treatment to that joint, which normally resolves the problem, instead of allowing it to become a persistent, chronic problem.
