clavical brace

(5 discussions)

I broke my right clavical 6 days ago.
I was given a brace to wear 24 hours a day.
The brace layed right next to my break causing pain.
I have not been wearing it due to that.
Have you seen people not wear a brace and heal ok?

Jill,You did not give your age, nor the specific type and location of the fracture, so the following statement is for a typical mid-shaft fracture in an adult. It is my experience, as well as that of almost every Orthopedist that I have worked with over the past 20 years, that simple Clavicular fractures heal whether or not a person wears the Figure-of-Eight shoulder brace. Years ago, we used to put them on everybody, but most Orthopedists today don’t put too much stock in them. They will usually offer them to the patient, but tell them that they can take it off if they either feel it is uncomfortable, or is not helping. Unless your doctor told you that you had either a severe or unusual type of fracture, I would not worry…you should heal just fine in about 5-6 weeks no matter what you do. As a side note, the younger the patient, the quicker the healing period. Let us know how you make out, and good luck.

I’m 17 and I was in a car accident about 10 days ago and fractured my clavical. It feels almost fine now and I can wash and do my own hair now. My aunt told me that if I keep moving my sholder that it will form a lump. I won’t lift anything until I go to the doctors again in a couple of days and because of the slight discomfort. Is this true? Also, I am supposed to go to the beach in about 2 weeks; will my sholder be ok for the water by then?

I am 27 I broke my right clavical last year about an inch from my sternum. I went to the emergency room (should have known better) they took xrays gave a brace for a broken arm it healed sorta. its overlapping more than an inch I still feal bone on bone contact when I cross my arm to the left side of my body. I have an almost constant cramp in my neck…. It basically affects everything that I do. I am curious if the hospital should have do more to secure it or to set it…or if there is anything that can be done to fix it.

This is the kind of bull Sh@# I ran into when I broke my collar bone a couple of months ago. I went to three different doctors and it just seems to BAFFLE them that maybe they could SET the fracture. What the he##. It’s the 21st friggn century, They can map the human genome and CLONE people but whatever you do DON’T ask them to SET a clavical! It wan’t until I threatened to cast it MYSELF that I got ANY reaction from the medical community at all.Would you let an arm or a leg heal like that? NO! Then why don’t they stop trating a clavical break like a cut or a bruse and SET the friggn’ thing. I usually heals with one end of the break overlapping the other which SHORTENS the overall length of the bone and throws out the geometry (Don’t tell me it doesn’t, It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realise that if you shorten ANY bone 1″ or more it’s gonna put something out of wack) And this BUMP they talk about, YOU HAVE TWO ENDS OVERLAPPING EACH OTHER! NO WONDER THERE’S A BUMP THERE!!! Looks great too! But they say the bone will remodel itself over time. Well I guess this is true, If you have 600 YEARS to wait for it!SET THE FU@#ING THING! HOW HARD IS THAT????!!! And if it’s to hard, FIND A WAY!!! Current treatment is UNACCEPTIBLE!
