clavicle mal-union

(2 discussions)

I am 15 days into a clavicle fracture. 2 days ago the ends finally stuck together and quit moving around. today I saw an orthpedic surgeon. my concerns are numbness and tingling in my wrist and fingers and muscle spasms in my neck. also my shoulder is now an inch narrower on that side (no joke). I am left handed and the left side is the fractured site.the ortho advised against surgery. he told me to focu on my posture and let the arm hang straight down to allow the tension on the nerve to release and that will help with the numbness and tingling.tonight while talking on the phone I stood for about 20 minutes and the pain was unbearable and the tingling only got worse. to look at myself in the mirror I can see plain as day the shortened shoulder, it is so obvious you can see it even when I am wearing a shirt.this surgeon suggests plate and screws and had not heard of the Hagie pin intramedullary fixation method.should I really just leave this alone or see another surgeon for a second opinion. I really don’t want to live out my life with a shortened shoulder especially on my favored side. What should I do???? I’m seriously considering having my wife force the shoulder (re-break) back and try to hold it in place until it can heal over again. I tried doing it myself but couldnt. the figure 8 strap wouldnt hold the bones right. it missed the jutting out half and only pulled the other half towards my back and down allowing it to drop in behind the top half. we must have tried every position and varrying degrees of tension on it, nothing worked.should I accept having a shortened shoulder and just allow it to heal this way?

I have a clavicle malunion, and the clavicle is over an inch shorter. It has led to complications – Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, Scapulothoracic Symptoms, and it just keeps getting worse. Who can I find that understands a shortened clavicle causes these problems, and a doctor to do the osteotomy.

Do some research on Dr. Carl Basamania at Duke. He is the rock star of collarbones/clavicles. He put mine back together with surgery and it healed perfectly. The best thing I ever did. Google him and you will find plenty. Make an appointment to see him now.
