Could this be a stress fracture?

(3 discussions)

I tripped and fell on July 4th in my driveway and thought I had sprained my left ankle and foot.
I stayed off of it for a few days and put ice pack on it.
Since then, My foot has only gotten worse. I did not get any Xrays nor have I gone to the doctor yet. I have a small knot on the side of my foot near the middle of my foot.
Over the past few weeks the pain has spread radiating across my foot in the area below my ankle and especially across the top of my foot.
It is really tender in the area by the knot and now I am having nerve twinges that startle me cause they are really intense pain.
They don’t last long tho.
I can pin point the pain area to be in the area below my little toe and the next one but its in the middle top area of my foot. The top part of my foot swells when I walk on it…and my foot is stiff and the pain is bad at first when I stand up after being off the foot for awhile.
I still have trouble bearing weight on it.
I think it was probally not just a sprain now.Could this be a stress fracture?
What should I do now?

Without an exam and x-ray, I can’t tell for sure. You probably don’t have a stress fracture- that is usually due to repetitive strain. This was a sudden jolt. You may actually have a fracture and the lump might be bone callus. Go see a podiatrist or orthopedist and get an X-ray.

I finally went and got it xrayed…..the xray say report said I have a “chronic non-healing fracture of the left foot.” the nurse just read me part of the report…. I am being referred to an orthopedic and also to have an MRI done. Not sure just where my foot is fractured as she didn’t tell me. My lower ankle, the outer side and across the top middle area of foot have alot of pain still. My foot still swells up and I have bad electrical shocking pain in it. Walking aggravates it. I also have numbness and tingling in my little toe to the middle toe area radiating down from the middle top of my foot. What do you think they can do for my foot since its been almost 3 months since I hurt my foot? I am a diabetic, type 2…how will this effect it healing. I go on Wednesday to the ortho. Will let ya know what I find out then.

I am glad you got your foot re-xrayed. Since you still are not clear about what the problem is, make a list of questions (I prefer typed!) for your doctor. This way you don’t clam up in the office and leave more frustrated. Ask things like-where is my foot fractured? Do I have a delayed union or non-union? What is the prognosis? Will I need surgery? You get the picture? Don’t leave until you are comfortable understanding. Remember to see is to know, not tosee is to guess. Good luck. Good luck
