Deciding on Bunionectomy

(3 discussions)

I am 24 yrs old and have a small, but very painful bunion on my right foot.
Three cordizone shots later, the doc said the only way to rid pain is surgery.
I opted for the surgery and then began reading some info on the internet.
I realize that I will be in a boot for 6 weeks, but I read that I won’t be able to wear “fashionable shoes” for six months.
I also travel every other week for my job.
I told my boss this wouldn’t be possible for 6 weeks, however, after reading all this, I fear it may be longer.
Will I be able to get around airports and cities with ease after 6 weeks, or will it be much longer?
If I can live with the pain a little longer…should I wait?

Your questions are all very valid and it is good you are thinking ahead. But I am not the one to answer them. The doctor who treated you and has your X-rays and knows you is the best one to address all your concerns. If necessary, write down all your questions beforehand and don’t do anything until you have the answers you need to know.

How can you tell if the bunion that you have is a simple, moderate or severe bunion?A foot doctor told me that when I get the bunionectomy that it is only going to take me three weeks to heal. What kind of bunion only takes three weeks? Also, Why would my foot take three weeks to heal and every one else takes six weeks to heal?

Hi Kristen, I am in the exact same situation as you are. I have my surgery scheduled for 12/30, but I’m starting to have doubts. I can live with it. I’m starting to think that the surgery isn’t necessarily going to solve all the problems. And, the thought of not being able to work out for 6 to 8 weeks (at least) really freaks me out. If I can’t ever go back to wearing fashionable shoes, what’s the point?
