Dislocated finger

(2 discussions)

Dear Dr.,Five weeks ago I dislocated my right index finger at the middle knuckle so that it bent upwards 20 degrees or so.
I reset it quickly and had full, normal range.
There was ever only slight purple discolouration. What home therapy can I perform, and is it normal to still have local inflamation, tenderness and only 40% range? Thank you

Please get an X-Ray, and evaluation, and then let us know how you make out. Good luck!

Everything was normal. He said the finger is a “bad actor” and takes a long time to heal simple dislocations. He prescribed a bunch of fancy anti-inflamitories and a therapist. I have chosen to take Advil and perform finger exercises copied from his orthopaedic book. I had to talk his assistant out of these. I have noticed good improvement this the 12th week post trauma, but can still only squeeze the size of a tennis ball. Does this all sound about normal? Thank you for your reply. Thad
