Distal Biceps Tendon Rupture

(4 discussions)

What is the exact rehabilitation for a distal biceps tendon rupture.
I had surgery 3 months ago to repair my tendon, and am starting lifting light weights this week.
How many pounds should I start curling with, and how many pounds should I add per week?

I am at 12 weeks since surgery. I started to use weights 2 weeks ago. They started me at 2 lbs. They told me to do triceps/over the head. Bicep curls and wrist curls all directions. Also have one of those hand exercisers. They want me to do 10 reps twice a day. At those weights I was at over 100 about 4 times a day. I have since moved up to 5 lbs. Same but I feel it at about 50 reps. I see the doc. in the AM. I’ll be asking how much weight can I bump it up to.

My husband had a tendon rupture in Mar of this year. As of now he still has no functional use of his hand and can barely turn his wrist. He can move his thumb but that is it. His hand rests in a fist. I am wondering if anyone else has had the same issue since surgery. They have completed a nerve conduction study and we are awaiting results. He has been going to OT for the past 4 weeks with no improvement. Any insight?

Angie, I had surgery 8 weeks ago on my left arm for a ruptured bicepts tendon. Had the same injury on my right arm 4 years ago. I’m told it’s like winning the lottery having both arms with the same exact injury. Not sure about that! Both surguries used the two incision approach (Boyd and Anderson). The right arm had the same exact problem you are describing. It’s from trauma to the Ulnar nerve on the underside of the elbow. It took me about 8 weeks to regain use of the three fingers on the hand. Permanent damage to the nerve is a possibility, but unlikely.

I had distal bicep tendon rupture surgery July 10th of this year. My surgeon(Dr. Todd Obrien Danvers MA) used the two incision approach (Boyd and Anderson)he also told me the operation wasa “Text Book” repair!. Two days after surgery he had me start moving my arm from 90-30 degrees…. It is now August 12 and I have already started using weights with my arm…started with 2.5 lbs. now I’m up to 10lbs. I have had no other problems since the surgery.David in MA
