Feet fall asleep

(2 discussions)

While doing cardio on an eliptical machine my feet fall asleep after about 5 minutes or so.
WHAT CAUSES THIS? WHAT CAN I DO TO STOP IT?
I found that every 5 minutes if I stop and wiggle my feet it lessons the discomfort.
I have tried to unlace my shoes – does not help.
I have tried to position my feet differently – does not help.
I have tried wearing different shoes – does not help.

If the top of your feet fall asleep, then it is possible the position they are in is impinging ont he superficial peroneal nerve on the top of the foot. If the bottom of the foot is getting numb then it involves the posterior tibial nerve. Most likely the tendons surrounding the nerves are swelling causing the problem. As far as fixing it, I can’t really say, other than to try a different activity.

My feet did the same thing but only on the eliptical machines that had the handle bars that move with you. The reason is that all your weight is leaning on the balls of your feet and so that’s where all the blood rushes. If you go on the eliptical machine that doesn’t have the arm bars, your feet won’t lean as much on to your toes, making your blood flow through your feet in a more natural state. Hope this helps!
