foot pain

(2 discussions)

I injured myleft foot about 4-5 years ago, I had a snow plow on a truck fall on it.
I have seen numerous doctors, x-rays up the you know what, and don’t forget the mri’s.
They say they can’t find anything but the foot is always bruisedand weak.
It will lock up and not move, and feels like there is a piece moving around inside. Compression helps stabalize the foot but doesn’t help with the burning and stretching feelings.
I have size 15 boots and can’t find a brace that works good. Any ideas?

I’m not a therapist, but I’ve been in therapy.
Well, geeze dude… you had a snow plow fall on your foot… no doubt it still hurts. Let’s go over this as was explained to me: Scar tissue, swollen tissue due to poor healing, lengthy therapy time, time in cast, damaged nerves, possible bone fragments, torn cartilage, scratched cartilage etc… all this may be causing your problems and pain. Post-traumatic pain and arthritis likely. If compression helps, it sounds like you still have swelling issues, but I don’t know if that will ever go away at this point; I was told that swelling had to be aggressively fought in the beginning of the healing process, otherwise it would be persistant for a much longer period of time, which would explain why you still have bruising too. I know how uncomfortable a wrap can be after an hour, but this was much more important to do at the beginning. I’m not a doc, so don’t quote me on this, but I’d be icing and wrapping my foot as much as possible. You need to get that swelling down, because it’s screwing your circulation over too. If your foot swells, the only way to help the circulation get going again is to ice it, thus reducing the swelling. Keep your foot elevated while icing to promote better circulation, which is the key to healing your snow-plowed foot. Ever try icing it with electro therapy? Increases circulation while reduces swelling… and a really cool sensation. Lasts around 15-30 minutes per session. Groovy. Though I didn’t have a snow plow fall on my foot and ankle, I had a pretty bad break. One thing my doc said was that I could get the cartilage scoped and shaved since they couldn’t see anything on the xray. You said they couldn’t see anything on the MRI, but has anyone actually scoped your ankle and foot? I think after 5 years you should check this option out. Maybe a piece of scar tissue, bone or cartilage is floating around or rubbing against a nerve (your swelling no doubt magnifies this issue)… I often get a burning sensation due to scar tissue around my incision sites. You also mention a stretchy feeling. I’m guessing, based on my physical therapy, that you’ve been favoring that foot since your snow plow disaster. You might put less weight on it… walk with a limp, might even look like you’re doing a little shuffle to your own music… this type of favoring leads to what you might call a misuse of muscles, or bad muscle memory. You’ve spent 5 years training your foot to walk the wrong way. As a result, your body tries to use muscles that have undoubtedly atrophied or have just become shortened from lack of use. You get a stretchy feeling every time your body tries to correct its balance. Get back into physical therapy! See a foot doctor that actually has a passion for fixing you. If you don’t get that vibe, kick him to the curb, and find another one dude.
Peace, Love, and Hope. Percacet doesn’t hurt either. (smile)

Its been about two months since the accident and I will be attending pt for my foot soon and I was wondering what are some exersises that I can do at home in the mean time.
