foot pain in teenager

My son has had foot pain for 2 years now.
At first they said it was achilles tendonitis, and later said it was ..some big long name..but that his growth plates are wide open, and when he grows, the pain will go away.
Basically, he just has to live with it.
Hewas a very active athlete, but with the pain, he is a depressed couch potato.
Is there anything we can do besides wait until he grows?

From your description, it sounds like your son has calcaneal apophysitis. It is a very common complaint. Dr. Abrams oftens places these kids in a shock absorbing heel cup and recommends icing the area before and after any activities. Also, an anti-inflammatory, such as Advil or Aleve can be very helpful. If this continues, I would recommend that you see a podiatric physician in your area for further follow up.Misti
