fracture of 5th Metetarsal – How to reduce swelling

(2 discussions)

I twisted my foot stepping off a step and was diagnosed with a fracture of 5th Metetarsal.
It was 3 days before I had it x-rayed.My foot is still (4 days) swollen a lot.
I keep it elavated when I can – Should I use ice or heat?
What is normal time for swelling to subside?
thank you very muchDavid Long

Did you get it cssted? Are you walking on it? I broke mine on May 5 and have been non-weight bearing since … and it still swells on days I am up and about a lot … but it swelled a lot every day when I had a below the knee cast .. now I have a removable boot and brace and swelling isn’t nearly as bad …good luck with healing … be patient and do what your doctor says … treatments for fracturing this bone vary a LOT depending on where and how the fracture occured …

Oh … Yes, I ice and elevate it whenever it is swollen … and your doctor probably mentioned that ibuprophen (if you’re not on meds that react badly with it) will help with swelling … Do NOT use heat on swelling, btw … just in case you didn’t already realize that … and elevation needs to be above your heart to do any good … footstools or lying on the couch are not enough …best wishes … I know your pain! really ….
