fractured lateral malleolus

(3 discussions)

Just over two weeks ago, I turned my ankle and incurred a hairline fracture on my my left lateral malleolus, as well as a torn tendon (not sure the name of it) in the front of my foot, while on vacation in Ireland. When I returned to the States five days later, my doctor set me in a new cast, and then last Thursday I had an open reduction where they put a five-hole plate over my fibula. I have been informed that I will need to wear a fiberglass, non-weight bearing cast for four weeks and then a walking cast for an additional four weeks, followed by physical therapy. What I want to know is whether I will need another fiberglass cast for the second four-week period, or do I have the option of wearing a removable boot or brace? Also, I am not clear about my physical therapy. How long and how often will I need it? What will be involved in this therapy?

Every doctor has their own way of doing things. As far as the cast vs, walking boot, and physical therapy, I would suggest you call the doctor and ask these very same questions. What I would do might be slightly different, but not necessarily better or worse. Good luck.
