My elderly mother fractured two ribs a few days ago, and two 6 inch ace bandages were applied for pain relief. She took them off for showers and periodically through the day. Another sibling indicated that a “sports doctor” advises against this treatment stating it would greatly increase the chance of pneumonia. Please advise. Thank you

Denise, I would appreciate any info you found. My husband was broadsided 5 days ago by a kid doing 80 miles per hour. He suffered three broken ribs and bruised lungs. I have been told there is a high risk of pneumonia and that he will be in pain for quite some time. Any other info would be appreciated. My email is [email protected]

as an avid mtn biker, I suffer fractured ribs frequently…most probably just cracked…but the last one (ten days ago) is fractured per chest x ray and ct scan…current treatment is no bandage… It limits your ability to breathe deeply…pain is worst first week…hurts to cough, laugh sneeze etc…roll over in bed…but goes away in about 6 weeks….happy healing

: I would appreciate advice, references. links, experience.Older biker just broke rib. Doctor advises pneumonia happens. Must keep lungs clear. Splint injured side by holding arm tightly against rib cage with elbow bent hand up, leaning against wall and coughing 3 times hourly to clear fluid buildup. Rest.

My mother was hit by a mini van, and eight ribs were fractured. She spent two weeks in the hospital. She went for a follow up exam, and the x-ray indicated that there is fluid or left over blood in the area of the lung. Is this normal and what should be done at this time? Also, my mother is 74 years old.

Fell on a cable box as I was delivering it to a customer. It landed side up and into my upper rib area. It is hard to find a position when sleeping. Lifting is out of the quetion. So far I haven’t but one time to carry a ladder and climb a pole. The last carry left me catching my breath. If I eat to much or burb it is instant pain like a ton of heartburn. Strecthing for anything, leaning, or just getting out of bed is traumatic. Aspirin helps in the morning, and I just found some Motrin 400s, sigh,, ,, When laying down in bed I feel a pressure like someone is sitting on my chest. Not to mention that my basement flooded and a good friend needed help lifting the Power snake into the back of his truck, OUCH !!! I felt a sharp pain and almost dropped it on me. I was stupid I know, now today I am trying to take it easy although it is back to work tomorrow and to my Physcian.
