Fractured Tibial Plateau + Physical Therapy?

(4 discussions)

Well I fractured my tibial plateau, a type 2 Shatzkers fracture, at the beggining of April, had surgery on the 7 of April and have wanted to start physical therapy. My orthopedic surgeon put a L-sensoredress plate, five screws, and cadaver bone into my leg. It has only been three weeks and yesterday was my first P.T. session. The P.T. was great I gained 20 degrees my first day from bending my leg at 95 degrees to 118 in one session. So, anyways my surgeon called and said that he had accidentally had his nurse send a script to the P.T. saying it was o.k for me to begin physical therapy, and that he wanted me to stop immediately. The exercises that I was doing and will continue to do are not weight bearing excercises which put absolutely no stress on the fracture. So my question is why would the doctor not want me to work the muscles and bend my leg when I’m not putting any weight on the bone and I had no damage to my knee. Also i’m an 18 year old male, in great shape and I can’t stand sitting around doing nothing with my leg. Any help, advice or suggestions. Also if you could possibly give me an extimate or know how long a shatzkers type 2 tibial plateau fracture takes to heal? I know that is a broad question but any help is greatly appreciated.Sincerely,Mike Schallock

I got the same fracture on april 22…within a week I had a physical therapist coming to my house to bend my knee… I don’t know why they wouldn’t do the same for you.

I had a tibial plateau fracture off the lateral side and tibial eminence dislocation/relocation. more like a schatzkers type 1 but more involved. I have a sports medicine ortho guy. I was injured mid may and now 5 weeks after the injury I am just getting the cast off.(non surgical management) I have not yet been scheduled for PT. I am appalled at how small my quad and calf are. I am now in a hinged knee brace with 0 to 30 degrees of flexion.(or 180 to 150) whichever you prefer. Non weight bearing for 7 more weeks this sensored. I am 32 yo male. smoker. Good health except that. How is every thing now and where are you at with your therapy. how does your leg look? REMEMBER ( I am an OR Nurse) every ortho guy has their way of treating things and they will all vary slightly. You will find info to support all kinds of treatment variations. I hope you are well.

Mike, It usually takes quite a while for those to heal! You shouldn’t snow board this year because it could do further damage. Also isn’t it your knee that it hurt?

i shattered my knee 10-20-05. basically the dr. surgically screwed me back together and said there you go, you’re gonna need a knee replacement in I year, come back on the anniversary date and we’ll review your progress. that’s it no therapy? no advice as to what to do or not to do. I have good range of motion, I am just in pain every day. now what do I do? sit and wait for the bone to heal? or do I actively exercise it? i’m afraid of making it worse. what do I do?
