fractured toe, detached toe nail

I smashed my toe on the 13th of September and the toe nail separated from my toe. I went to the emergency room where they completely removed the nail and re-positioned it as a sort of splint for my fractured toe. The nail feels as though it is partially attached at this point and I am unsure how to clean underneath the nail. The toe is still extremely sensitive and bleeds occasionally. There is also a distinct odor as the wound appears to not be healing underneath the nail. How should I be attempting to clean the area underneath the nail? What happens if there is an infection?
