haglunds deformity

(2 discussions)

My daughter is 12 years old and figure skates 5 days a week. She is very dedicated and competes often.
My doctor told us she has what they call “pump bumps” on both of her feet. Recently she has been complaining that they really hurt and that they don’t look so nice when she wears sandals. Do you recommend surgery at her age to have them removed and if so, what is the recovery like and how long before she can skate again?

I do not do surgery on a patient where there is an open growth plate. The growth plate in this area may not close until 14. An x-ray will confirm if the growth plate is open or not. Silipos makes an Achilles tendon pad that I find useful in some people for this problem. This is a link http://www.ortho-net.com/silipos/silipos_achilles_heel_pad.htm

Have the inside lining of the skate punched out right where the bump is. The deformity has 2 stages When she is not wearing skates, have her use sandals, etc, that do not have a hard back.
